Gua Sha
Gua Sha or scraping has had a long history in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Unlike acupuncture it is a non-invasive procedure that can be performed in the clinical setting or at home. It is the practice of rubbing the skin with an implement that will increase blood circulation at a specific location on the body. It can be used for pain relief and expelling Wind evils such as colds and flu.
The Gua Sha tool, or a soup spoon, is slowly and continuously rubbed in long strokes on the targeted area after applying a lubricant such as scented oil, or warming oils.
Sha marks will be visable for a few days before disappearing. During that time, the area should be kept warm and the patient should drink a lot of water to help move the toxins out of the body. Most people feel the release of pain immediately and feel pain free when the sha is completely gone.
Gua Sha is a safe, simple and effective traditional procedure.
